I had my bag with camera, wallet, hearing aids, and glasses stolen in the Villa Weise hostel in Swakopmund, South Africa. I shared a room with 3 young English girls who were into partying and so did not lock the door. There were other groups on safari in the hostel which was well guarded. My insurance company, Vero (from Westpac Bank website) has knocked back my claim because the girls were not travel companions who I had organised the trip with from Australia - Section 6. Okay. I should have read the small print of the booklet and I would not have replaced my camera in Cape Town but I thought I was covered. I have been travelling for 52 years and this is the first time I have had anything stolen. Lucky? or careful? Let's say careful. I usually travel on my own and certainly will in future as I am far more security conscious then. Incidentally, this was the one and only time I shared a room with these girls - who had left iPods, cell phones etc etc lying around but they had nothing stolen. So who can you trust? Noone.
